Christmas Eve Magic

Sacred Space minister Karekin is affectionately known as “Mama K.” Sacred Space hosted a 2019 Christmas Eve service at Castro and Market streets. An article appeared in SF Gate – the web edition of the San Francisco Chronicle.

What it’s like to attend a Christmas Eve mass for the queer and homeless in SF:

The spirit of the holidays is alive with Sacred Space

From the article by Dan Gentile posted on December 30, 2019:

On Christmas Eve, the streets around Harvey Milk Plaza stirred with life. A line of people snaked around the Castro Theater, waiting to see the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus. Others ducked out of the cold into restaurants. Just outside the Muni station, a chorus of voices sang, “O, Come, All Ye Faithful.” Above the sound of the hymn, a man in the distance screamed, “F— you.”

After the song ended, a tattooed and pierced minister named Mama K led a small group of 10 worshippers through the Serenity Prayer.

“God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the Courage to change the things I can: and the Wisdom to know the difference.”

It’s a universal mantra, but particularly resonant when it comes to Sacred Space. The organization provides inclusive religious services to the city’s queer and homeless communities, in association with the San Francisco Night Ministry, which has done street outreach since 1964. For four years, they’ve come to this corner at 6:30 p.m. to hold a Mass for those less fortunate, passing out treats from Hot Cookie, hot chocolate and fresh socks.
